Towing Equipment: Trailer Hitch
Choosing the right towing equipment can mean the difference between safely hauling your load or creating a dangerous situation. Part of selecting the right towing equipment means getting the right trailer hitch.
- First, check the towing capacity of your vehicle, as this will ultimately determine how much load you can tow. Make sure you keep safety in mind by staying within the towing limits of your vehicle.
- Next, figure out the correct trailer hitch class when deciding on a trailer hitch. For instance, a class 1 trailer hitch could pull up to 2,000 pounds. A class 5 trailer hitch would allow you to pull 5,000 pounds.
- Then look at the type of trailer hitch. Ball hitches are common because they easily fit most cars, SUV's, and trucks. Heavy-duty hitches are appropriate for lugging loads such as horse boxes and industrial equipment.
It is sometimes necessary to use vehicle haulers similar to those used by regular towing companies on a farm. For this reason, farm vehicle haulers are available. These again can come in different sizes, depending on the vehicle being towed.
In fact, an ordinary utility trailer, if it has a sturdy enough floor, can be pressed into service as a vehicle hauler for a lawn tractor that may have run out of gas or suffered damage while being used, and was too far away to be pushed in for repairs. However, one could not expect to be able to haul a full-size bulldozer or other piece of large farm equipment on that. A larger vehicle hauler would be the type of towing equipment especially suited for such use.
